The Backstory

In 1957, the famous Belgian crystal manufacturer Val Saint Lambert partnered with the New York distributor "Vogue Ceramics Industries" and entrusted the design of its American export lines to Peter Muller-Munk. The designer challenged the traditional codes of lead crystal by infusing it with the energy of American modernism. This bowl (model T 309 from the period catalog) is the perfect illustration: a moving triangular form that is both futuristic and timeless.

Technical Details

The technique used here is that of cased glass. The Belgian master glassmakers encased a dark amethyst core within a thick layer of clear crystal. During the blowing and manual stretching towards the three points, the thin layer of color thinned out dramatically. It is this goldsmith-like craftsmanship that creates this magnificent, ethereal, and translucent gradient at the tips—the visual signature of the manufacturer's art pieces.

The Galerie POPINCOURT Opinion

What immediately captivated us about this "Tricorne" bowl is the incredible contrast between its visual presence and its physical reality. At first glance, the massive edges (up to 12 mm at the points) and the depth of the amethyst color suggest a heavy, imposing block of crystal. In hand, the surprise is total: the object weighs only 600 grams! This is where the genius of Peter Muller-Munk’s design lies. The center is so deeply flared and concave that it literally empties the piece of its heaviness, transforming a solid crystal object into an aerodynamic, airy, and vibrant wing.
We love its space-age silhouette and its hypnotic amethyst hue that catches light like no other piece. A rare collector's item with incredible elegance on a teak sideboard.
The transatlantic collaborations of the 1950s between great American industrial designers (such as Muller-Munk or Wright) and European crystal manufacturers (Val Saint Lambert, Venini) are particularly well-documented and sought after by international collectors. The presence of the original hand-engraved signature under the base, validated by original archival documents, ensures the lasting value of this heritage investment. It is the type of "crossover" piece (both art glass and a milestone of modernist design) whose value remains very firm on the art market.
