The Destiny of Philipp Ullmann and the "US Zone" Era

The POPINCOURT Gallery presents a major historical and cultural piece from the famous Nuremberg manufacturer, TippCo: the Hudson Limousine. Manufactured in the immediate post-war period, this model with its aerodynamic profile bears the precious original marking "MADE IN GERMANY, US ZONE" on its chassis. Beyond the Allied division, this specimen embodies a poignant human adventure: that of the head of TippCo, Philipp Ullmann, forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1933 (a period during which he would go on to found Mettoy in England, the future creator of the famous Corgi Toys).
Returning to Nuremberg in 1948 to take back the reins of his seized factory, he immediately relaunched production. The choice to reproduce this American automotive icon under US administration testifies as much to Ullmann's resilience as to the genius of the industrial recovery of the time.

A Haute Couture Finish

Unlike common productions of the era, this specimen stands out for the absence of lithography: its tinplate body is enhanced by authentic original lacquer paint, a deep and vibrant "Burundi" red, which has remained in spectacular condition. The automotive illusion is complete thanks to the presence of added elements and accessories in a chrome finish: massive radiator grille, bumpers, side trim strips, and the prestigious TippCo monogram proudly displayed on the flanks.

This model represents the aristocracy of the toy world of that era by combining two forms of energy. On one hand, a powerful, fully tested, and functional clockwork mechanical motor that drives the rear axle, equipped with a selective braking lever under the chassis. On the other hand, an onboard electrical system that was bold for the time: a central compartment can house a battery which, via a dedicated switch, powers the two original bullet headlights.

Exceptional Condition: An "Unplayed" Specimen

The state of conservation of this Hudson Limousine is exceptional.
The bodywork shows no traces of impact, dents, or deformation that might have been caused by a child's play. The original Burundi red lacquer has retained all its deep luster, offering a perfect contrast with the added chrome elements. The battery compartment is clinically clean, free of any historic acid leakage, which is extremely rare for a piece of this era. The front axle remains perfectly functional via the integrated steering slider.

The POPINCOURT Gallery's Opinion

"This Hudson Limousine by TippCo is a historical piece of rare elegance. Its Burundi red lacquer finish, highlighted by its chrome trim and markings, breaks radically with the printed tin toys of the time. Seeing this flagship of American design shaped by the craftsmen of Nuremberg under the 'US Zone' label tells the story of post-war Europe and the extraordinary destiny of Philipp Ullmann all by itself. With its generous dimensions of 24.5 cm and its electrical system preserved in clinical condition, it is an absolutely masterful display piece."
